Known to sailors as “the Jewel of the Pacific”, Valparaiso Chile is one of the South Pacific’s most important sea ports. During the California gold rush prospectors sailing from the East coast to the West coast of the United States in search of gold rounded Cape Horn and stopped in Valparaiso. It was a half way point to a new future. Many European travelers fell in love with the city and never left. Valparaiso was once home to the most wealthy street in South America! The first stock exchange, fire department, public library, telegraph, and hot shower in South America were in Valparaiso. After the opening of the Panama Canal most of the wealth of Valparaiso fled to new cities but 100 years later much of the city stands unchanged.
